Sub Rosa, this production’s title, is a term I came across writing/developing this piece. Despite assuming I was somewhat versed (excuse me please, pronounced–ahem–with two syllables) in the English language… I had no familiarity with sub rosa.
A lookup online via pop-uppable sources (i.e. https://t.ly/i6U6S) explained sub rosa means under the rose in Latin. Yes, yes. But in modern parlance — “confidentially,'” “privately,” or “secretly.” I felt good energy, also dark energy coming from the term. So there we have it — slapped right on.
It seemed important to say all that. Now I’m questioning if it was, but anyways… about the story itself:
This is about a middle-aged woman recalling a teen experience during an early 90s summer, and also, for her, a time in the shadow of 1982. Main character “Elizabeth,” shares from the current day first-person. Sub Rosa is recalled via memories in the cities of Knoxville and Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
